STORE

Don’t wash head lettuce until you’re ready to eat it. 

Cutting the lettuce also exposes more surface area to lose moisture, and more surface area that’s susceptible to mold/bacteria in the environment, so don’t cut until ready to eat. 

Leafy greens are not major producers of ethylene. However, they are sensitive to ethylene, so leafy greens should be stored away from major ethylene producers such as bananas, apples, kiwi, and bell peppers. 

If your fridge has storage where the humidity can be adjusted, greens do better in higher humidity. Fridge temperatures should also be maintained below 40°F.

The total shelf-life for whole head lettuce can vary from 1-3 weeks generally. Shelf-life will depend on how old the product is when purchased, and whether ideal storage conditions are maintained once at home.
