Family Meals: Do Better Together
As a Registered Dietitian, I care about the health of you and your family! That’s why I love celebrating National Family Meals Month™ and National Fruits & Veggies Month every September and sharing more about the benefits of eating more family meals together. Family Meals Month is a nationwide event designed to share the benefits of family meals on the health of children and adults alike. Did you know that more meals at home result in: better eating habits, increased fruit and veggie consumption and higher self-esteem?
I know that juggling jobs, kids and the demands of a busy, modern life often come at the expense of family mealtime at home. As a retail dietitian, I’m your ally—the solution to your mealtime dilemma with recipes that the whole family will love and you will, too, knowing that it’s a balanced meal that (of course) contains fruits and veggies. See some of my favorite recipes below!
Ham, Cheddar and Apple Quesadillas – Who doesn’t love a quesadilla? Add a little crunch with sliced apple to perfect this savory and sweet quick meal that will be a crowd pleaser.
Sweet Potato and Black Bean Chili – What feels more like fall than a chili? Add a little pizazz but switching out your typical chili beans with black peans and cubed sweet potato.
Chicken Enchilada Soup – if you’re looking for a fall soup to wow the crowd, this one has you covered!
Mandarin Orange Chicken Stir Fry – Stir fry is my go-to in a pinch and this one steps up my normal go to by adding in mandarin oranges. Dietitian Tip: This one calls for fresh mandarins, but the canned variety can be a great alternative when you can’t find fresh in your produce department.
As the school year starts up again and we get back into a regular routine, make the effort to enjoy family meals throughout the week. Need more ideas? Check out our Meals In Minutes Cookbook for great family recipes that can be made in 30 minutes or less!
